ABOUT ROOTED FOR CHANGE

ROOTED for Change is a Central Texas–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps working families achieve financial stability.

We support individuals who are employed but still struggle to afford essentials like housing, food, childcare, and transportation—often earning too much for assistance but not enough to keep up with rising costs.

Our work starts by helping families stabilize during hard moments. From there, we support adults with job readiness, financial coaching, and connections to better-paying opportunities that lead to long-term security.

Founded by a workforce development professional with over 15 years of experience, ROOTED for Change partners with schools, employers, and community organizations to create practical, community-driven solutions so families can not only get by—but thrive.

Our
Story

Get to Know Us

ROOTED for Change began with a simple yet powerful belief: lasting change starts at the roots. Founded by Dr. John M. Edwards, a strategist, educator, and advocate, ROOTED was created in response to the deep, systemic challenges that continue to impact marginalized communities—from lack of access to education and wellness resources to ongoing cycles of poverty and disconnection.

Dr. Edwards saw firsthand how many systems treat the symptoms without addressing the source. Instead of waiting for change, he and a small group of committed leaders decided to build it—starting with listening to the people most impacted. From that vision, ROOTED was born: a space where access, healing, and growth aren’t just ideals—they're actionable, everyday realities.

Today, we continue to plant deep roots by meeting people where they are and building pathways toward where they want to go.

OUR VISION & HISTORY

The Vision

At ROOTED for Change, we envision a world where every individual is rooted in knowledge, well-being, and community support—thriving in health, empowered through education, and connected through shared growth and purpose. Through our programs and initiatives, we strive to create positive change and make a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.

It Started in Memphis.
ROOTED for Change was founded by Dr. John M. Edwards—a Memphis native, strategist, and lifelong advocate—who witnessed firsthand the impact of underfunded schools, limited healthcare, and economic exclusion. But he also saw something else: unwavering resilience. Communities rising despite the odds. Families building from scarcity. Educators showing up without fail.

The Seed Was Real-Life Struggle—and Strength.
Dr. Edwards built ROOTED from this dual truth: that inequity is real, but so is the power to overcome it. He knew that change wouldn’t come from charity or handouts—it would come from centering community voice, investing in real access, and creating systems designed to last.

A Mission in Motion.
ROOTED for Change is more than a nonprofit—it’s a movement. A commitment to expanding access to education, wellness, and economic opportunity. A belief that everyone deserves the chance to thrive. And a daily practice of showing up, breaking barriers, and building futures.

This is Transformation Work.
What we do isn’t one-size-fits-all or temporary. It’s personal. It’s generational. It’s grounded in purpose, nourished by resilience, and rising with every program, partnership, and person we serve.

WHAT'S NEXT

ROOTED is growing—and so is our impact.

In the coming months, we’re launching new partnerships, expanding our wellness and education programs, and building the foundation for our future ROOTED Community Center—a physical space for healing, learning, and belonging. This center will be more than a building; it will be a hub for mentorship, workforce support, mental health resources, and multigenerational connection.

With your support, we’re not just imagining what’s possible—we’re creating it. Together, we’re building a future where every person has the tools, access, and support to thrive.

Man Painting a Wall
“I had the chance to sit down with Dr. Edwards and hear about the vision for ROOTED expanding here in Kyle—and I was blown away. You can feel the passion and purpose behind every word. This work is exactly what our community needs, and I’m genuinely excited to support it however I can. The future feels different now… in the best way.”
