ROOTED for Change began with a simple but powerful belief: access can change what's possible. Founded by Dr. John M. Edwards — a strategist, educator, and advocate — ROOTED was created from a recognition that individuals and families often have the potential to thrive but may not always have access to the resources, relationships, and opportunities that help make it possible. Dr. Edwards saw firsthand the difference that education, wellness, economic opportunity, stable communities, and meaningful support can make in a person's life. Rather than assuming what communities need, ROOTED was built around listening first, developing strong partnerships, and creating pathways that connect people to opportunity. Today, ROOTED continues to grow from that foundation — meeting people where they are, expanding access to resources and opportunities, and building pathways toward greater stability, growth, and possibility.

It Started in Memphis.
ROOTED for Change was founded by Dr. John M. Edwards — a Memphis native, strategist, and lifelong advocate — whose experiences shaped his understanding of how access can influence opportunity. Growing up, he saw the realities communities face when schools are under-resourced, healthcare is difficult to access, and economic opportunities feel out of reach. But he also witnessed something powerful: communities supporting one another, families finding ways forward, educators showing up, and people creating opportunity even when resources were limited.
The Seed Was Real-Life Struggle — and Strength.
Those experiences became part of the foundation for ROOTED. Dr. Edwards understood that lasting change requires more than responding to immediate needs. It requires listening to communities, expanding access to resources and opportunities, building meaningful partnerships, and creating pathways that help people move forward. ROOTED was built from a simple belief: when people have access, possibilities expand.

What's Next for ROOTED
ROOTED is growing — and so is our impact. In the coming months, we're launching new partnerships, expanding our wellness and education programs, and building the foundation for our future ROOTED Community Center — a physical space for healing, learning, and belonging. This center will be more than a building; it will be a hub for mentorship, workforce support, mental health resources, and multigenerational connection.
